Your first cenote dive
Open Water or one-star certification minimum · Minimum age: 15
Beneath the Yucatán jungle lies a silent world, sculpted in stone and pierced by sunlight.
A cenote is a natural sinkhole formed by the collapse of limestone, revealing exceptionally clear freshwater below. Thousands of cenotes are found across the Yucatán Peninsula, connected by the world’s largest network of underground rivers. They are both a geological wonder and a sacred legacy of the Maya, who regarded them as entrances to the underworld of Xibalba.
Unlike ocean diving, the filtered freshwater of the cenotes often provides visibility beyond 30 metres. Sunlight streaming through the openings creates spectacular beams between stalactites and stalagmites shaped drop by drop over tens of thousands of years. It is a peaceful, almost meditative experience, unlike anything in the ocean.
The recreational cenote dives offered here take place in the cavern zone, within a short distance of natural light and an exit, along wide passages. With a certified cavern guide, the level of risk is comparable to a regular ocean dive. The deeper, darker and more technical sections of the system—true cave diving—are reserved for specially trained cave divers and are not part of these trips.
We meet in Playa del Carmen in the morning and travel in an air-conditioned vehicle to cenotes selected according to the day’s conditions, your preferences and your experience level. The trip includes two dives at different sites, with a break for lunch, snacks and drinks, followed by a return to Playa del Carmen later in the day.
Between 300 and 700 pesos for the day, payable on site.
Every cenote offers a different level of difficulty—select a level to see the available sites and requirements.

Cenote diving is available from age 15 to divers with an Open Water certification or equivalent. Parental authorization is required for minors. No previous cenote experience is necessary: before each dive, I explain the environment, route and specific safety procedures. Some deeper or more technical sites require additional experience, so I recommend the cenote best suited to your certification, number of logged dives and comfort underwater.
No. Recreational cenote dives take place in the cavern zone, along suitable routes where natural light remains visible. Cave diving beyond this zone requires specific technical training.
Every cenote has a different atmosphere, with sunbeams, rock formations, freshwater or haloclines, and passages that may be wide and open or more intimate. Tell me about your certification, experience and what you would like to discover, and I will recommend the most suitable sites.
The price includes personal guidance, transportation from Playa del Carmen, diving equipment, snacks and drinks. Cenote entrance fees are not included and vary by site. An additional fee may also apply if you wish to use your own underwater camera in a cenote that charges for photography.
It depends on the cenote. As the guide, I am not permitted to take photos or videos during cenote dives. Chac Mool and Kukulkan prohibit underwater cameras to protect the sites. Other cenotes allow them but may charge an additional fee for using your own equipment. Please let me know before the trip so I can explain the applicable rules and fees.
“Rémi is a fantastic dive instructor. He introduced us to some magnificent cenotes and shared his passion and knowledge of every place we visited. I still have stars in my eyes 🤩 You can trust him completely. I recommend him 100%!”
“I have just been diving with Rémi in two cenotes near Tulum, and the experience was exceptional. Rémi was very professional and gave us plenty of information about each cenote and the dives themselves. His dives are organized in small groups of four divers or fewer and tailored to our needs and abilities. He even picked me up right outside my apartment.
I highly recommend REMIDIVING—in French, English or Spanish.”
“A fantastic French-speaking guide who also speaks English and Spanish. You absolutely have to dive the cenotes with him—for his chef-level desserts and his access to many lesser-known cenotes that are harder to visit with other operators. It was a truly enjoyable experience!”
Two dives, one independent guide, and cenotes selected for your experience level.
